Restoring Onrus Beach: A Call to Action

Seeff Hermanus proudly supports the Onrus Beach Restoration Project, a crucial initiative aimed at reviving the beauty and vitality of Onrus Beach following the recent flood damage. As a sponsor, we understand the importance of safeguarding this cherished destination, not only for its aesthetic value but also for the economic, recreational, and communal significance it holds for the Onrus community.

About the Project:

The Onrus Beach Restoration Project was initiated in response to the significant damage caused by a flooding event on September 25, 2023. Led by collaborative efforts from the Onrus River Ratepayers Association, Onrus River Rescue Group, and Onrus River Estuary Forum, in coordination with the Operational and Environmental Department of the Overstrand Municipality, the project aims to restore Onrus Beach and its surrounding areas to their former glory.

Cleanup Focus:

The project's immediate focus lies on two critical sections:

  1. Section A - The Beach:

  • Safety Hazard: Substantial tree stumps pose safety hazards and require urgent removal.

  • Access Route: Limited access via Habonim has been confirmed for cleanup efforts.

  1. Section B - Lagoon Area:

  • Cleanup Area: Stretching from seaside rocks to the mountainside, this area requires the removal of tree stumps and organic debris washed down from the river.

  • Sensitivity: Guidelines and procedures must be established due to the area's sensitivity, with hand removal of reeds amongst the rocks to facilitate cleanup.

  • Access Route: Challenges with large equipment necessitate manual removal of reeds.

Environmental Compliance:

The cleanup activities adhere to NEMA environmental parameters, and environmental authorisation is not required. The primary focus is on Sections A and B before the upcoming holiday season.

Debris Disposal:

Once cleared, debris will be responsibly disposed of, with one solution being transportation to the waste site at Karwyderskraal for composting.
