The recent Hekkie Bazaar, a fundraiser held in Sandbaai, proved to be a resounding success, drawing an even larger crowd than the previous year. The outpouring of support from the community was truly remarkable. A total of R34, 720.00 was raised, a contribution that the organisers deeply appreciate. This sum will enable them to continue their annual tradition of procuring groceries for those in our community who are facing hardships. Their ability to provide assistance relies on the generosity of the public, both in terms of monetary donations and food supplies. Keep an eye out for their exciting upcoming fundraising event, a 'Potjiekos' Competition!
Origins of the Hekkie Projek:
When the pandemic struck, churches and community centres, often lifelines for those in need, had to close their doors due to lockdown regulations. For many individuals and families, this meant losing access to essential resources, including food parcels. Ester de Villiers, unwilling to stand by while her fellow community members suffered, took matters into her own hands.
Ester's Journey of Compassion:
Ester started the Hekkie Projek from her own home, sharing groceries from her pantry with those who were struggling. As the demand for assistance grew, she reached out to friends and acquaintances, encouraging them to donate groceries to her gate, which she would then distribute to those in need. In a time when strict restrictions limited contact, Ester's visit from "hekkie" (gate) to "hekkie" became a symbol of hope and solidarity.
The Hekkie Projek's Evolution:
As lockdown restrictions eased, Ester transitioned from doorstep deliveries to heart-to-heart visits with the recipients. Through these encounters, she not only provided essential items but also lent a compassionate ear to their stories, offering much-needed emotional support during trying times.
The Birth of the Hekkie Bazaar:
Recognising the increasing demand for support, Ester and her team decided to organise the Hekkie Bazaar, a fundraising event to further aid the Hekkie Project. The Bazaar became a lively celebration of community, filled with the enticing aroma of boerewors sizzling on the grill and the delicious scent of potjiekos wafting through the air. Children found joy in the festivities, laughing and playing as they indulged in ice cream and freshly made pancakes.
Impact and Growth:
Thanks to the tremendous backing from the community, the Hekkie Project has experienced significant growth. Presently, the initiative provides food deliveries to 75 individuals spanning from children to the elderly. Their efforts encompass the distribution of food parcels to residents in Fisherhaven, Onrus, Sandbaai, and Westdene.
